Schnitzel Burgers with Muenster Cheese on Pretzel Buns

A delightful recipe combining the classic schnitzel with the all-time favorite hamburger, topped with creamy Muenster cheese and zesty dill pickles, all nestled in chewy pretzel buns.

  • 2 Slices Muenster or Swiss Cheese
  • 2 tbsp Finely Chopped Dill Pickles
  • 1 tbsp Canola Oil
  • 1/2 lb Ground Pork
  • 1 tsp Minced Garlic
  • 1/4 tsp Dry Dill
  • 1/4 tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/4 tsp Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese
  • 1/2 cup Plain Panko Breadcrumbs
  • Salt and Pepper, to taste
  • 1 Egg, Beaten
  • 2 tbsp Mayonnaise or Light Mayonnaise
  • 1/2 tsp Fresh Squeezed Lemon Juice
  • 1 tsp Country Dijon Mustard
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 2 Medium White or Yellow Onions, Sliced Thinly
  • 1 tbsp Sugar
  • 1 cup White Wine or Water (for Deglazing)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Onions: Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat, add butter, and caramelize sliced onions for 15-20 minutes until golden and sweet.
  2. Mix the Burger Ingredients: Combine ground pork, garlic, dill, onion powder, Worcestershire sauce, Parmesan cheese, panko breadcrumbs, and beaten egg in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper.
  3. Shape the Patties: Form the mixture into two equal-sized patties, about ¾ inch thick, with a small indentation in the center of each.
  4. Cook the Burgers: In the skillet with the caramelized onions, heat canola oil over medium heat and cook patties for 4-5 minutes on each side. Add cheese slices in the last minute of cooking.
  5. Prep the Sauce: Mix mayonnaise, lemon juice, and Dijon mustard in a small bowl and adjust to taste.
  6. Assemble the Burgers: Spread the mayo mixture on pretzel buns, layer with burger patty, dill pickles, and caramelized onions, and top with the other half of the bun.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add jalapeños to the burger mix or swap the pork for a vegetarian option.
