French Onion Beef Sloppy Joes

A comforting twist on classic Sloppy Joes, featuring the rich flavors of French onion soup and melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Swiss or provolone)

Instructions

  1. Sauté the onions and garlic: In a large skillet, heat about a tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and stir. Cook for about 10 minutes until soft and golden brown. Toss in the minced garlic for another minute.
  2. Brown the beef: Push the onions to one side and add the ground beef to the other. Cook until no longer pink—about 5-7 minutes. Mix everything together.
  3. Add the flavors: Stir in the Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, pepper, and beef broth. Let it come to a gentle simmer—about 10 minutes.
  4. Thicken the mix: Cook longer if you want a thicker filling, or add a cornstarch slurry for quick thickening.
  5. Melt the cheese: Remove from heat and sprinkle cheese over the beef mix. Cover with a lid and let sit for a couple of minutes.
  6. Toast the buns: Toast the hamburger buns until golden and slightly crispy.
  7. Assemble and serve: Spoon the beef mixture onto each bun, and enjoy your Sloppy Joes!

Notes

Serve with a fresh salad or crispy potato wedges for a complete meal. Customizations include adding jalapeños for spice or using BBQ sauce instead of broth.
