Southern Soul Food Baked Beans

A flavorful Southern classic, these baked beans are perfect for barbecues and family gatherings, combining sweetness and savor with a hint of spice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound navy beans (dry)
  • 8 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup yellow onion (diced)
  • ½ cup green bell pepper (diced)
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • ¾ cup barbecue sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic (minced)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon (ground)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard (ground)

Instructions

  1. Soak the beans by rinsing them under cold water and soaking overnight or using the quick soak method by boiling for 2 minutes and letting them sit for an hour.
  2. Prep the flavor base in a large pot by heating oil and sautéing diced onions and green peppers for 5–7 minutes until soft.
  3. Mix in the minced garlic, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, molasses, brown sugar, and BBQ sauce, stirring to combine for about 2 minutes.
  4. Add the soaked beans and pour in the broth, bringing the mixture to a gentle boil.
  5. Sprinkle in the salt, pepper, smoked paprika, cinnamon, and mustard, and let simmer uncovered for 1.5 to 2 hours.
  6. Final touches entail adjusting seasoning and allowing the beans to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Allowing the beans to sit after cooking enhances the flavor. Feel free to experiment with variations like adding jalapeños for heat or bacon for a smoky touch.
