Amish Sweet Bread

A delicious, soft, and subtly sweet bread that evokes comforting childhood memories.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 large eggs

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast: Combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast in a mixing bowl. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Mix the ingredients: In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and eggs.
  3. Kneading the dough: Mix until a sticky dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. First rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise for 1-2 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Shaping the bread: Punch down the dough, shape it into a loaf, and place it in a greased loaf pan.
  6. Second rise: Cover and let rise again for 30-60 minutes until it has risen above the edge of the pan.
  7. Preheat the oven: Set it to 350°F (175°C).
  8. Bake: Bake for 30-35 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding.
  9. Cool and enjoy: Let sit in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
