  • 8 cups thinly sliced apples
  • 2/3 cup lightly packed brown sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon water
  • Coarse sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare your pie crust, rolling it to about 1/8 inch thickness and fitting it into a 9-inch pie plate.
  2. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  3. Slice your apples thinly, tossing them with lemon juice.
  4. Create the filling by combining the apples with brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and salt.
  5. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat and stir in the apple mixture, sautéing until the apples soften.
  6. Fill your pie with the apple filling, mounding it high in the center.
  7. Top with the second crust or your desired topping and crimp the edges.
  8. Egg wash the crust with a mixture of egg and water.
  9. Sprinkle coarse sugar over the top if desired.
  10. Bake for 15 minutes at 425°F, then reduce to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-45 minutes.
  11. Cool the pie for at least 30 minutes before serving.
