Red Velvet Cinnamon Rolls

A decadent twist on classic cinnamon rolls, these Red Velvet Cinnamon Rolls combine warm, buttery dough with a swirl of cinnamon and a rich cream cheese frosting.

  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk, warmed
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tbsp red food coloring
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for filling)
  • ¾ cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • ½ cup mini chocolate chips (optional)
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened (for frosting)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (for frosting)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 24 tbsp milk (for frosting)

Instructions

  1. Activate the yeast by combining warm milk and sugar, then sprinkle the yeast on top and let sit until foamy.
  2. Mix dry ingredients in a bowl: flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Combine wet ingredients in another bowl: melted butter, egg, food coloring, and vanilla extract, then mix with yeast mixture.
  4. Bring the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until a dough forms.
  5. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 5-7 minutes until smooth.
  6. Form the dough into a ball, place it in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1-2 hours.
  7. Make the filling by mixing softened butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and chocolate chips.
  8. Shape the risen dough into a rectangle, spread filling, and roll tightly into a log.
  9. Slice the log into 12 pieces and place in greased dish.
  10. Cover and let rolls rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  11. Bake at 350°F for 25-30 minutes.
  12. Whip frosting ingredients together while rolls bake.
  13. Frost the rolls when slightly cooled and serve warm.

Notes

For added flavor, consider incorporating a teaspoon of orange zest into the frosting or adding nuts to the filling.
